Digital banking brought a new era of convenience and choice to consumers long accustomed to walking into their local bank branch. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated this transition online. But as apps replaced teller windows, cybercriminals found new and more technological ways to steal consumers’ money.
Hiding behind false credentials, masked IP addresses, and now, the highly credible impersonations of generative AI, these fraudsters are seizing consumer accounts, misusing them for crimes, or simply draining them of funds. In this presentation, David Maimon, director of the Evidence-based Cybersecurity Research Group at Georgia State University and head of fraud insights at SentiLink, explains how account takeovers happen, the growing role of gen AI in simplifying and scaling takeover activities, and the steps financial institutions can take to defend against this kind of fraud.
