E.U. Prepares Fresh Sanctions on Russia Banks: Sanctions Update

European Union officials are considering new bank sanctions, according to the Wall Street Journal.

WSJ reports that EU officials are discussing “how to deploy the bloc’s anti-money-laundering blacklist against countries found to be helping circumvent Western sanctions. Those discussions include whether to place Russia on the EU blacklist, although officials say no decision is imminent on that.”

An announcement could come as soon as next week. This week, U.S. officials are in Brussels discussing sanctions enforcement, and possible secondary sanctions against third-party countries that may help Russia diminish the impact of global sanctions.

Reuters also reported that the magnitude of the new measures being discussed depends upon “ Moscow's stance on gas payments in roubles.”
